War-dated partly-printed DS, one page, 11.5 x 16, July 31, 1862. Military Governor of Tennessee Johnson appoints Joseph H. Hornback a “First Lieutenant Company ‘E’ in the First Regiment Middle Tennessee Cavalry.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by Johnson and countersigned by his secretary of state. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some scattered light toning and soiling, otherwise fine condition.
